Yes, you are missing something ...
It's been determined that left side advertisements draw more attention than the right side ... The whole object is obtaining clicks ...

Not only that, but people who frequent a lot of sites that use Linkbucks would probably appreciate a bit of change, as looking at the same type of ads all the time may bore them a bit.
The colossal misunderstanding of our time is the assumption that insight will work with people who are unmotivated to change. Communication does not depend on syntax, or eloquence, or rhetoric, or articulation but on the emotional context in which the message is being heard. People can only hear you when they are moving toward you, and they are not likely to when your words are pursuing them. Even the choices words lose their power when they are used to overpower. Attitudes are the real figures of speech. - Edwin H. Friedman

This is 1000% correct. If you look at this heat map (yes I know it's google) you will see that people look at the left most of the time.

I would also recommend looking at this article which tells one how to optimze for website ad exposure.

    I fully disagree ...
Google and adsense still implement left sided advertisements ... Everything on the right and nothing on the left ? ... Can you say Ad Blind ?
    Plus
with your image example.. my attention was instantly drawn towards the left.. why ? .. eye catching colors ...

I think Linkbucks innovative left sided idea hit the nail right on the head ...

Surfers also become Ad Blind and overlook advertisements ... I've always been a fan of placing advertisements under the header ... ( Traditional )
( Top rotating banner / variety of eye catching colors )
Most read a website from top to bottom ...

With respect to the Left and or right sided advertisements :
I do recall Google receiving lots of complaints that their sided advertisements impeded text and image views ... Very annoying especially without a X Option to close the advertisement ...

    X-Out
/ Skip this ad option with a less intrusive pop-under is a excellent suggestion to avoid what Google experienced not to long ago ...

    Just my thoughts
